MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION

Review of the smears prepared from this fine needle aspiration of the right lobe of the thyroid gland shows a markedly cellular process of the thyroid, consistent with a follicular neoplasm. The presence of prominent nuclear chromatin and nucleoli as well as increased cellularity strongly suggest that this is a neoplasm of follicular origin. Oxyphilic cells predominate suggesting a Hurthle cell neoplasm. Features of papillary carcinoma are not identified. Serious consideration should be given to excision of this mass to exclude the presence of a malignant neoplasm.

- CELLULAR FOLLICULAR NEOPLASM, SUSPICIOUS FOR MALIGNANCY. (SEE COMMENT)

COMMENT:
Suggestion for excision is made because of Hurthle cells and a brisk cellularity strongly suggesting a neoplasm that is possibly malignant representing either follicular carcinoma or a low-grade neoplasm.
