Q. How is the liquid based Pap Test™ different from the conventional Pap smear?
A. Conventional Pap tests are conducted by scrapping cells from the cervix and then having them smeared onto a slide in the doctor's office. Liquid based Pap Test does not differ in the way the sample is obtained; it differs in the manner it is preserved. The sample is collected into a vial with fluid preservatives. This allows more cells to be sent to the laboratory for processing. At the lab the unwanted materials are processed out of the sample and then the cells are transferred onto a slide. This allows the cells to be spread onto the slide in a uniform thin layer that makes it easier to interpret the sample.
Q. Why should you ask for a liquid based Pap Test?
A. Liquid based Pap Test is the first major improvement in the way a Pap smear is obtained in 50 years. This new method gives more accurate results.
Q. Can you request the Liquid based Pap Test instead of the conventional Pap test?
A. Yes, you as a patient can request to have the liquid based Pap Test; however, you must call your healthcare provider in advance to make sure that they have the supplies to do this test.
Q. Is there proof that the liquid based Pap Test is more effective then the conventional Pap test?
A. Studies involving thousands of women have indicated that the liquid based Pap Test increases the detection of precancerous cells. In a recent study the liquid based Pap Test was credited with more then doubling the detection rate of precancerous conditions, as compared with the conventional Pap smear.
